It’s the second city of the country in population and the most important metropolis of the central zone. It is emphasized for its colonial past, since this city had great importance as part of the Viceroyalty of Peru. Visiting the streets of the immediacies of the Plaza San Martin has a clear panorama of its strength, as well as of its architectural and historic past. Set against the plaza, is the Cathedral, of the 18th century, and the city Hall, today room of expositions. Other places that can visit are the Chapel of the Bishop Mercadillo, the Monastery of the Carmelitas descalzas of Holy Teresa of Jesus, the Church of the Company of Jesus, the National University of Cordoba and the School of Montserrat, the Academy of the Science and the Museum of Fine Arts. Other attractions are the Basilica of the Mercy, the Church of the Pilar, the Museum Sobremonte, the Church San Castle and the Convent and Church of San Francisco. Among the green spaces is the Park Sarmiento, a green space of 170 hectares with Greek theater, artificial lake, zoological garden, an Olympic swimming pool and other attractions.
