Located by the beautiful Nahuel Huapi Lake it’s the most important city of the region and second touristic center of the country, where most the tourists arrive. Almost the whole year is high season, alternating beach and snow. It has a very active commerce with a big local presence on wool and leather clothing, chocolates, perfumes, marmalades and different types of smoked meat, including trout, salmon, wild boar or deer among others. The Nahuel Huapi Lake was a great attraction even for the explorers coming from the Pacific and the Atlantic. In 1670 the Jesuits were the first ones to build there.
In 1903 arrived Primo Capraro, an italian that for 30 years built almost everything in town, opened a few shops and hotels. And with tourism began the interest on preserving the native fauna and flora. In 1907 Francisco Moreno donated 3 hectares and a decree reserves another 43.000 hectares for the Nahuel Huapí National Park, then expanded in 1922 to 785.000 hectares.
