Information about Lago Puelo

120 kilometers from San Carlos of Bariloche (Rio Negro) and 165 km. from Esquel (Chubut), integrating the Andean Region of the Parallel 42º is found the locality of Lake Puelo, a typical little mountain village, nearby of the homonymous lake. You can arrive by the national route 258 (totally paved) from San Carlos of Bariloche, in terrestrial and air form with 12 daily frequencies.
With a population of 5500 persons this picturesque locality is located near the Currumahuida Hill and at the shore of the lake. In this place, each year, in the month of January, they are carried out in joint form the National Festival "The Forest and their Environment" and the days "EcoPuelo". The origin of the name Puelo is mapuche and has two meanings: "water of the east" or "End of the road". The region already is named in the stories of Spanish explorers of last century, where is spoken of "native with hoops in the nose that came to the valleys to hunt".
Of the sources of production and economy of the region, the tourism is emphasized. Important complexes of hostels, cabins and residences spread themselves for the valleys of the region. The general tourist offering it’s 5 times bigger than seven years ago. The inhabitants understand that this will be the resource for the future and because of it they work in improving the already existing offering considering a sustainable development and the defense of the environment. In this area is to emphasize that, the cost of the fuels in the region (subsidized al 50% of the remainder of the country) does that, the visitors be increased in progressive form in each season.
In a nearby future, with the opening of the International border at Lago Puelo, a binational circuit will be integrated and will have as points of reference to Puerto Montt, in Chile, Lake Puelo, El Bolsón and Bariloche in Argentina. This step, that is in advanced construction will not suffer cuts in the winter season by being the lower one of the mountain range of the Andes and will permit the tourists to travel through an incomparable landscape full of lakes, rapids, forests and valdivianas jungle.
